Media Software and Services

MSS is home to our RealPlayer media player software that enables consumers to discover, play and manage audio and video programming on the Internet via a personal computer. MSS also provides SuperPass, a subscription based service that provides access to audio, games and video content; and manages a handful of media-oriented websites, such as Film.com, RealGuide.com and Rollingstone.com.

We continue to pioneer new ways for consumers to access and store video content from the Internet. In 2007, we introduced a new feature with RealPlayer 11 that allows consumers to download video clips off of the Internet with a single click, to store those videos in their digital library and send links of those downloads to their friends. In late 2008, we introduced RealDVD, a consumer software product that allows consumers to save DVDs they own to their computer hard drives for safer storage and better portability. RealDVD is currently unavailable due to an injunction on its distribution imposed by a federal court in the Northern District of California. A hearing is scheduled for January 2009 to determine the merits of suits filed by RealNetworks and by several movie studios regarding copyright issues.
